About the event
This poignant and surprisingly funny tale is the remarkable true story of Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes), who decides at 38 he wants to experience sex for the first time.
The problem is: since a polio attack aged six, he's been confined to an iron lung, except for a few hours a day when he can be wheeled around on a trolley. Fortunately Mark, a practising Catholic, has a sympathetic, unorthodox priest (the quirky William H Macy), who helps him overcome his religious objections and urges him to "Go for it!" when sexual therapy is offered as a solution.
The title of the film refers to the sessions Mark then has with a surrogate, Cheryl Cohen-Greene (Helen Hunt, Oscar-nominated for her performance), a married woman with a teenage son.
This funny, moving, beautifully acted movie avoids numerous pitfalls. It's neither clinical nor triumphalist. It's honest about desire and love. It will simultaneously evoke tears of laughter and emotion.
